Competitive Analysis

Qustodio and Bark

My research on the competition included the top two most similar apps ranked and reviewed by toptenreviews.com. I read customer reviews and discovered that there was plenty of room for IMPROVEMENTS.

Interviews & Survey

Research Goals

- Learn how parents FEEL about media consumption within their family
- Understand the PAIN POINTS that parents deal with in order to manage media consumption
- Find out what METHODS parents currently use to regulate and monitor media consumption by their children
- Understand the WILLINGNESS of the family to adopt a new digital product to help parents manage media consumption in their homes

User Interview Feedback

I spoke with four parents with a total of seven children between the ages of six and 15. Most parents wanted to maintain a delicate balance between respecting their children's privacy and being over protective.

This tends to cause some guilt for the single parent.

I really want less tech in my life.

User Survey Feedback

I received nine responses to a survey with seven closed, and open-ended questions. None of the parents currently use a stand-alone product for setting preferences. The results validated the insights learned from the interviews and provided extra detail on methods parents are using to manage media consumption.

I belong to a parents group on Facebook that provides good recommendations.

My church holds a weekly parents group at which we often discuss social media influence and consumption.

Insights Gathered

I wondered if I had included families with three or more kids, would there be a higher percentage that are already using an App.

Research Synthesis

A Parent Has An Idea

During one of my interviews, one of the parents described how the problem starts at the retail level.

"Parents buy a $1,000 device for their child, then you get home and its a FREE-FOR-ALL trying to figure out how to set up the parental controls. It becomes a TUG-OF-WAR within the home."

Before you hand a new device to a child, all of the protection should already be setup. This is a NEW OPPORTUNITY and will set the stage for a good experience in the home.

Service Blueprint

A Holistic Approach

Parents would love to be able to buy a new phone for their kids, THEN have the preferences all set up BEFORE they get back home. The red path shows the current painful option of scrambling to set up a new device at home. The green path shows the scenario with a new touchpoint of having the device set up BEFORE the parents get home from the store.

What if:
- There was a new touchpoint at the physical check out to improve the purchase experience?
- You could pay a little extra to have the parental control preferences set up by a Brand Ambassador?
