User Research

Discovery Map

After speaking with Miguel and Mariana, I used a discovery map to organize their feedback so I could start to understand themes and connections. Our conversation allowed me to have empathy for the López family, and gain insights about their pain points in managing media consumption for their kids.

Research Synthesis

Research Anchors

Miguel and Mariana wondered if there was an easier way to set and manage preferences. They imagined the ideal tool that would help them feel in control of their household.

Persona

The López Household

Their Goal:
To spend LESS time monitoring their children and MORE time enjoying each other's company.

ACT 2  |  A Battleground

Every day they tried different METHODS of luring the kids away from their TV’s and devices, while hearing other parents share news about their children’s scholastic accomplishments.

Visualizing the Problem Space

Ecosystem Map

When seeking guidance, Miguel and Mariana interact with many others whose opinions they trust. It would make sense to combine all of these influencers together into one useful too.

My research revealed two additional opportunities:
- A need for SERVICE DESIGN at retail locations
- A need to INTEGRATE DATA from external systems

Problem Statement

How might we create a DEPENDABLE digital product that provides Miguel and Mariana with helpful SUPPORT and the FLEXIBLE control they need to accurately view and manage the media consumption within their household while maintaining respectful family BOUNDARIES.

Miguel

"Not everyone on the internet is evil"

Mariana

"There is hiding of screens..!"

Concepting

Creative Direction Strategy

The AVILLAGE App will support families by connecting the various elements within their personalized "village" to help them manage the media consumption in their homes.

Experience Map

A Day In The Life

Each family member engages with the App for different reasons throughout the day. Some of the tasks overlap and are made known to the other family members through a message feature. The children are limited to low-level functions.

Storyboard

A Day In The Life

The best way to show how each family member interacts with the App is through visual storytelling. I illustrated six KEY MOMENTS of engagement along with details of the tasks being completed.

ACT 4  |  A Plan

By using AVILLAGE, Miguel and Mariana were able to SET PREFERENCES around who consumes what and when. They were able to RESTORE an active, trusting, and respectful relationship with their children.

Easy Navigation

The Dashboard

AVILLAGE is organized around a single-page of important at-a-glance information.  Miguel and Mariana can quickly access important functions so they can set preferences on who watches what and when.
